Het leven van Eusthathios, Byzantijns geleerde en aartsbisschop van Thessalonica, beslaat ongeveer de hele twaalfde eeuw. Hij is het meest bekend geworden met zijn werk over de verovering en plundering van Thessalonica in 1185 door de Normandiërs (De expugnatione Thessalonicae). Voor filologen zijn zijn commentaren op de Ilias en de Odyssee van Homeros van grote waarde.
De emendanda vita monachica (oorspr.’Eπίσκεψις βἰου μοναχικοῦ ἐπὶ διορθώσει τῶν περὶ αὐτόν - Beschouwing van het kloosterleven ter verbetering van de betrokkenen) is een van Eustathios’ theologische werken.
Deze band bevat de teksteditie met apparatus criticus, apparatus fontium en een Duitse vertaling, alle van de hand van Karin Metzler. Zij heeft ook de vijf indices verzorgd (zie foto van de inhoudsopgave p. viii).
Een verantwoording van Metzlers onderzoek en een uitgebreid commentaar zijn verschenen in de serie "Supplementa Byzantina”, ook uitgegeven door De Gruyter. Deze commentaarband is nog leverbaar bij de uitgever (149 euro). De hier aangeboden tekstband (oorspronkelijk 129 euro) is inmiddels uitverkocht en hoogstens nog in een 'printed on demand’-editie te bestellen.
Het werk is gloednieuw, nog verpakt in de originele folie van de uitgever en gedrukt op zuurvrij papier.

The life of Eusthathios, Byzantine scholar and archbishop of Thessalonica, spans he entire 12th century. He is best known for his work on the Norman conquest and plunder of Thessalonica in 1185 (De expugnatione Thessalonicae). For philologists, his commentaries on Homer's Iliad and Odyssey are of great value.
The emendanda vita monachica (originally 'Eπίσκεψις βἰου μοναχικοῦ ἐπὶ διορθώσει τῶν περὶ αὐτόν - Contemplation of monastic life for the betterment of those involved) is one of Eustathios' theological works.
This volume contains the text edition with apparatus criticus, apparatus fontium and a German translation, all by Karin Metzler. She also provided the five indices (see photo of the table of contents p. viii).
An account of Metzler's research and an extensive commentary have appeared in the series "Supplementa Byzantina", also published by De Gruyter. The commentary volume is still available from the publisher's (149 euros). The text volume offered here (originally 129 euros) is now out of print and is probably only available in a printed-on-demand edition.
The work is brand new, still wrapped in the publisher's original foil and printed on acid-free paper.
