Photographer Frederick H. Evans (1853-1943) worked extensively and almost anonymously for the British 'Country Life' magazine during the early years of the 20th century. His photgraphs of English parish churches and French chateaux are one of the great treasure of the 'Country Life' picture library. His photos in this book offer a nostalgic view of France's historic chateaux as they were during a bygone age -- a period of calm as yet unaffected by the ravages of two World Wars, and the commercial developments, tourism and urbanization of the 20th century,
