Thomas Schütte (born 1954) relates his installations and objects always to concrete spaces that are mostly attributed to the context of art. The artist uses the space as a backdrop that is acted out by his small wooden figurines, his dummys of pillars or his painted sculptures. This volume documents works by Schütte from the last two decades in chronological order. The chapters concentrate on his installations from the seventies, a group of works from the eighties that altercated with the view of public buildings, theatre backdrops and imaginative spaces as well as his monumental sculptures made from steel or ceramics. The numerous coloured illustrations not only depict the works in the context of the exhibitions but also the watercolours Schütte used in preparation of his installations. Accompanied by several essays this colume can be considered the definitive retrospective of Thomas Schütte's present body of work.
