Because of the unique nature of the terrain over which they fought, the 'Desert Rats' went into battle in uniforms which often varied considerably from what was laid down by the regulations: what was worn by the men who gave a permanent place in history to such places as El A lamein and Tobruk was largely a matter between them and their commanding officer.
