But it was towards the end of the 19th century that Europe and America really awoke to the splendour of the Orient. So enormous became the demand for carpets that it resulted in a decline in standards of materials and workmanship. Forgerie, copies and poor specimens flooded the market. The vast variety of carpets makes indentification difficult. But the author of this book describes the many different carpets in great detail dividing them according to the region or village of origin and explaining the wealth of symbols used. With 80 pages of full colour and some 150 drawings in the text, this book is both an essential handbook for the expert or collector and a general introduction for anyone interested in these beautiful opjects.
