Christ and the apostles in a storm on the Sea of Galilee Etching on wove paper, by Ernst Willem Jan Bagelaar, after the painting Ludolf Backhuysen from 1704, executed in 1814, signed and dated below the image, platemark 99 x 152 mm., sheet size 118 x 170 mm. A threatening scene with dark tones and high waves. Although Bagelaar (1775-1837) was originally an army man, he soon turned to a life of art after instructing himself in etching, basing many of the etchings on his own designs. Literature: E123.
