The name Charles Frederick Goldie (1870-1947) is synonomous with the excellence of his paintings, mainly Maori portraits, although his earlier art extended over more general topics. In 1892 he went from Auckland to study art in Paris, returning about six years later. Realising that the older Maori, particulalrly those with intricate facial tattoos would soon pass-on, he decided, in the early 1900s, that painting their portraits would be the future thrust of this art. He developed a strong rapport with the Maori and soon found there was no shortage of willing subjects. From 1916 to 1928, following an illness, he did little art work, returning later to this calling and continuing to 1940 when ill-health again restricted his activities. His now famous Maori paintings are found in many gallaries and collections in NZ and others were sold directly to the public, including overseas travellers, during his two productive periods. Peter Blackley's "Goldie" presents an outstanding biography of the painter, as well as reproducing more than 100 of his paintings in colour, many of them full-page. The text is complemented by numerous photographs and includes contributions from three other writers on his place among NZ artists and the merits of his works, a number of contemporary assements are also repeated. A magnificent book, worthy of the art it presnts and a credit to those involved in its production. First edition of 1997, a card cover copy (also produced in hardback), 200 pages including list of Goldie exhibitions, text notes, bibliography and index, colour art/colour and mono photos throughout.
