The Republic of San Serriffe, consisting of two charming islands, was introduced to the world through a publication in The Guardian in 1977. It was one of the most delightful April Fool's jokes in British history. Before the internet came along, it was quite a challenge for those unfamiliar with the term Sans Serif to find out what it meant. The Republic produced a variety of delightful offshoots, and this book certainly is one of the most charming: it features a proof of a silver coin weighing 28 grammes of .999 silver, made in 500 numbered copies. This edition features 350 of these, showcasing the semi-fictional history of its creation, including a reverent nod to the Puffin, the coin from the 'king of Lundy Island' dating back to 1929. Additionally, there are two proofs of notes and a model of a note for 1000 shares from the Bird & Bull Press itself, along with a history and bibliography of the Bird & Bull Press. This book truly stands as a wonderful tribute to the joy of fun before the Internet era.
