Dr. Matthieu Ricard (1946) werd ruim veertig jaar geleden boeddhistisch monnik, na eenkorte loopbaan als onderzoeker aan het Institut Pasteur te Parijs.In Nederland brak hij door bij het grote publiek met het boek ‘De monnik en de filosoof’(1998), dat hij schreef samen met zijn vader, de filosoof Jean-François Revel. Matthieu Ricard is verbonden aan het Mind and Life Institute, een internationaal kenniscentrumonder auspiciën van de dalai lama, dat wetenschappelijke kennis vergaart over de werking van onze psyche. Ricard publiceert over meditatie, en over de relatie tussen wetenschap en boeddhisme. Zijn thuis is een Tibetaans klooster in Nepal, maar hij reist de hele wereld over om lezingen en retraites te geven
