l Presumably the author of Messalina is the Italian historican and satirist Gregori Leti, who died in Amsterdam in 1701. Charles II of England commissioned him to write a history of England. When he offended the king with an collection of anecdotes he fled England in 1683 and went to Amsterdam, where he became the historiographer of the city.
