A study of how women were viewed by the 1st century Jewish theologian Philo. The book places Philo within the context of hellenistic thought and follows his reading of biblical stories in which women play a major role. The author is a leading scholar on Philo and Alexandrian Jewry. She takes a critical stance regarding Philo, seeing him as perpetuating traditional patriarchal attitudes toward women with good women being meek and submissive to male control and bad women acting without male restraint.
