Only in the last few decades has Perugia changed from a place visited exclusively by an intellectual élite to one fascinating a vast international public who find a stay in this splendid and tranquil city of art in Central Italy pleasant and relaxing. In the past, few travellers broke away from the traditional Grand Tour to go to Perugia where the sole attraction was thought to be the great Arch of Augustus and a few other monuments. Today with improvements in education and communications there is a broader understanding and appreciation of history and culture as a whole. The signs of history are no longer evaluated according to strict, arbitrarily established classifications. Perugia has been discovered as a city presenting a rich concentration of history in a marvellously preserved urban context. Recent restaurations in the ancient centre and old residential areas have further valorised the monuments that represent the city's important role in history and art.
