¶ De Zuid-Nederlandse barokschilder Peter Paul (Pieter Pauwel) Rubens (1577-1640) was ook tekenaar, tapijtontwerper en diplomaat. Na zijn opleiding bij drie Vlaamse schilders werkte hij o.a. aan het hof van Mantua, de aartshertogen Albrecht en Isabella van Brussel. Hij schilderde veel altaarstukken met hulp van een groot atelier in Antwerpen. Geïnspireerd door de kunst van de Oudheid en de renaissance gebruikte hij veel mythologische motieven in zijn kunst. Met name Titiaan van de Venetiaanse School was een voorbeeld voor hem.
