When the tyranny of private capital first became apparent many were the roads to freedom advocated by the reformers, from the gradualism of our own Fabians to the full-blown anarchism of Bakunin. Bertrand Russell describes here, with his characteristic lucidity, the origins and significance of these movements, their value and their ultimate draw-backs, and tests each against the realities of daily work, the need for some law in life, international relations, and the freedom they allow to individual creativity in art and science. He ends with his own steady vision of the world as it could be. The book was written in the darkest days of the first world war, when Russell, on the point of being imprisoned, was perhaps at his most vigorous and clear-sighted in his concern for social reconstruction.
