'The Dutch Republic in the 17th c., led by A'dam, developed a unique way of trade, art and communication which was to characterize the rising bourgeois North-Atlantic culture sponsored and completed by Anglo-American enterprise in the 18th and 19th century. In 17th c. A. the basis factors of this new consciousness were already in full operation -- the fascination with sea and ocean, the defiance of any court style, the global expansionism, and the preference of character over heroism, of virtue over sainthood and of domesticity over grandeur.' The narrative is organized around pivotal dates such as 1578, 1603, 1617, 1637, 1642, 1650, 1697.
