An account of the nine days in 1926 when Britain went on strike. The General Strike threatened the survival of parliamentary government and brought the country nearer to revolution than it had ever been, before or since. The author was given access by the Trade Union Council to previously unexamined records in their archives and he says that this mateiral contains the heart of the matter from the trade union standpoint. However, the book is carefully balanced to give weight also to those involved in government and to include extracts from hundreds of letters from people who described their personal experiences during a strike which saw undergraduates working in the ports, volunteers driving buses and trains and when the government ran its own newspaper under the unofficial editorship of Winston Churchill.
