From page xxii: "For Turkey to become a truly democratic member of the society of nations, it has to confront this 'dark chapter' of its history, this 'shameful act', as Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, founder of the republic, called the Armenian genocide. Only full integration of Turkey's past can set the country on the path to democracy."
Since the first publication of the book in 1999, Turkey took the path to dictatorship, creating increasing isolation and looking at the East.
A very disturbing quote: "The goal was for Muslims to look upon attacks against Christians as the fulfillment of a religious duty."(p. 34)
And: "Muslims saw the deportations as an opportunity to take over Armenians' possessions at a minimal price."(p. 303)
A mixture of religion and greed, the former as a mask for the latter.
In 2007 (laat dus) werd het ophefmakende boek in het Nederlands vertaald en uitgegeven door Nieuw Amsterdam Uitgevers en wij kochten het toen aan.
Een paar dagen nadat wij het op onze website te koop hadden aanboden, kregen wij een telefoontje uit Limburg met het dringende verzoek het boek van onze website te verwijderen. Het verzoek kwam over als een dwingend bevel. Dat pressiegroepen zo ver gaan, was en is verontrustend. U kunt wel raden dat wij aan het verzoek/bevel geen gevolg hebben gegeven. Ondertussen is het duidelijk hoe het in Turkije met de persvrijheid gesteld is.
