The basic techniques of psychodynamic psychotherapy are well known. How they are used depends on the individual characteristics of the patient. This variation according to individuality or typology is what I mean by "nuances."
Several points of view on nuances of psychodynamic technique are presented. The first point of view concerns level of interpretive work by the therapist. Chapter 1 examines eight levels of interpretation from which a clinician selects one to use at any given time.
The second chapter deals with emotional themes and focuses on how one may integrate more conscious thoughts with usually warded-off unconscious potentials for thought and action.
An approach to analyzing the dilemmas of transference with such difficult patients is presented in Chapter 3.
Chapters 4 and 5 focus on how to use shifts in modes of representation from verbal expression to visual imagery and how then to describe subjective imagery in clear verbalizations, obtaining a cross-translation that reduces defensiveness and increases insight.
Therapeutic techniques for clarifying and dealing with such resistances are presented in Chapters 6 through 8.
Chapter 9 explores one of these typological styles, the histrionic, and reviews all the nuances of technique covered in earlier chapters in terms of how they may integrate to facilitate a change in mental schemas, emotional themes, and defensive style.
