Utrecht, W. van Yzerwordt, 1798, viii,222 pages, very attractive full tooled leather binding, gilt lettering and ornaments on spine, front and back, minor damage to top of spine, marbled flyleaves, written by Joannes Steenmeijer (1751-1802) in opposition to the ideas of Thomas Paine (1737-1809), who was an English-born American political activist, philosopher, political theorist, and revolutionary. He authored the two most influential pamphlets at the start of the American Revolution and inspired the patriots in 1776 to declare independence from Great Britain. His ideas reflected Enlightenment-era ideals of transnational human rights. Steenmeyer apparently did not agree with his thoughts on religion as set out in The Age of Reason; Being an Investigation of True and Fabulous Theology (three parts from 1794-1809) and saw the need to refute.
