After a trip to West Africa in 1851, he was chief surgeon on the Niger expedition (1854–55) and his book preceded Baikie’s “Narrative of an Exploring Voyage up the Rivers Kwo'ra and Bi'nue”. It is an account of the position and prospects of trade up those rivers with remarks on malaria and fevers of Western Africa.
