This short monograph by John?T.?Pawlikowski addresses the theological and ethical challenge posed to Christian theology by the Holocaust. The author examines how Christianity must reckon with the unprecedented destruction of Jewish life in the Nazi era, and asks how Christian faith and theology can respond credibly to such an event. He explores themes such as God?s presence (or absence) in the face of mass murder, the Christian tradition?s legacy of antisemitism, and the implications of the Holocaust for concepts of sin, evil, redemption, and human responsibility. In doing so, Pawlikowski argues that the Holocaust is not simply a historical tragedy but a deep rupture for Christian theology ? compelling Christianity to re?examine its self?understanding, its relationship to Judaism, and its role in modern society. John?T.?Pawlikowski, O.S.M., is a Catholic priest of the Servite Order and Emeritus Professor of Social Ethics at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. He has published widely (several dozen books and many articles) on Christian?Jewish relations, the Holocaust, and public ethics. He served on the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum Council (appointed 1980) and has been active internationally in Jewish?Christian dialogue.
