Plus d'informations
Cloth-backed boards with full-colour illustration to upper cover, 8 tipped-in colour plates, title-page drawing.
Undated, but 1917, according to Hall (Blampied bibliography, H.17.23a), and the gift inscription dated '1917' on the free first endpaper. Not in Lovett.
The charming cover image for this uncommon edition of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ is by the Jersey artist Edmund Blampied (1886-1966), widely known for his lavish version of J.M. Barrie’s ‘Peter and Wendy’ (‘The Blampied Edition of Peter Pan’), published in 1939 – among the very last deluxe gift-books of the so-called Golden Age of illustration.
Blampied had apparently been interested in illustrating a complete edition of ‘Alice in Wonderland’. He speculatively sent Nelson an Alice illustration. The publishers liked the drawing but, sadly, wrote, “in face of present costs we could not entertain a new edition of this book”.
The eight tipped-in colour plates plus title-page drawing are reprinted from Harry Rountree’s wonderful 1908 edition of ‘Alice in Wonderland’, also published by Nelson. (Note that neither Blampied nor Rountree are credited by the publisher.)
Rare in any condition; no other copy currently for sale online (2020).
Condition: Very good. Complete. A few pale smudges/finger-marks, a few small stains, one short closed tear, small surface tear to one mount, gift inscription to first free page on reverse of frontispiece mount. No free endpapers as issued. Binding tight. Boards with slight soiling, rubbing, bumping and wear to extremities.
