Contemporary blue calf with richly gilt spine and five raised bands, blind tooled checkered pattern, gilt fillet line borders, gilt dentelles, two letterpieces in red and brown morocco, marbled endpapers, all edges marbled and original reading ribbon.
Clean and fresh, no names, spots or browning. Bindings rubbed, top of spine of vol. 1 chipped.
Frontispiece portrait of Sir Brooke is replaced, facing page 22. All the lithograph plates are present, wood-engraved illustrations, but 10 engraved plates are missing except the engraved frontisp..
An unusual bright set in an attractive and desirable binding of a rare title in first edition. And key source for the biography of Sir James Brooke (1803-1868), army officer, who became the first rajah of Sarawak: "a Victorian imperial hero, yet controversial and loathed by some, he founded a state and established a regime which lasted a century, and also influenced the fiction of Kipling, Conrad, and lesser writers" (ODNB). Mundy (1805-1884), was ordered to Borneo on board the Iris in 1846 and, in co-operation with Brooke, conducted a brilliant series of operations against the Borneo pirate tribes, before taking formal possession of Labuan on 24 December 1846.
The lithographs are extracted from Mundy's own drawings, include his visit to the Sultan of Brunei, the capture of Brunei, and other actions.
