The authors—who are from a variety of ethnic and racial backgrounds, as well as different academic disciplines in the natural and social sciences—bring their perspectives together to show the diversity of claims about woman’s nature, being quite explicit about their political nature and effects. They conclude that the concept of woman’s nature has no scientific meaning and is not useful to women in their struggle to achieve economic and social equality.
Some feminists are also charged with using notions of woman’s nature. The authors feel a special urgency to underline the fallacy and disutility of such efforts. People are social organisms, and our biological and social organisms are intimately interwoven and build upon each other in multiple ways, so that it is impossible to separate and identify a biological nature.
