Fold-out map measures 61 x 43 cm (24" by 17"), entitled "The River Shire, The Lakes Nyassa & Shirwa, The Lower Courses of the Rivers Zambesi & Rovuma" - based on the Astronomical observations and sketches of Dr. Livingstone, constructed by John Arrowsmith, 1865. The routes of Dr. Livingstone and the Officers of the expedition are indicated in red.
Condition: firm binding, fresh copy, the map bears a 3 cm tear at the lower left side, a small archive number on a gold coloured ticket, an Ex Libris bookplate (Wisconsin Consistory Library, book presented by William Trinell). Rare in this pristine condition.

The American issue is more rare than the English (1865), the green cloth version is extra rare.

Livingstone's self-exculpatory account of the Zambesi expedition, of which the principal aim was to explore the river's mouths and tributaries in order to discover a navigable waterway into the interior. "In the course of the exploration of the Shiré River, Lake Shirwa was discovered, on April 18, 1859, and on September 16 Livingstone arrived at Lake Nyassa about two months before Dr. Roscher"
"It has been my object in this work to give as clear an account of country previously unexplored, and all others interested in the cause of humanity, the misery entailed by the slave-trade - a subject on which I and my companions are the first who have had any opportunities of forming a judgement."
"Dr. David Livingstone, the Scottish medical missionary, is known to history as the greatest explorer of his age and a dedicated humanitarian who devoted his life to the eradication of the African slave trade. He was a national hero to his contemporaries and time has confirmed his reputation as one of the greatest, if not the greatest, of the eminent Victorians, both in his achievement and in his influence."
