A dark horse -- but one on which you can count, for it is a superb story, of one of the great episodes in history, the trek of the Boers, driven by the English to seek new homes. The author has used the factual background, but against it has woven a plot that has romance and adventure, tragedy and humor, and people who come alive even to the minor characters of the background. One feels that incident has grown out of the characters, instead of the characters being superimposed on the facts, as is so often a weakness of historical fiction. A long book, that holds the interest from first page to last.
