With few exceptions the main works are included in this volume. The author offers sensitive observations and annotations; her introduction is both an art-historical essay and a biographical narrative. This book offers a comprehensive survey of the German expressionist artist and writer Ernst Barlach (1870-1938). Covering not only his famous sculptures but also his drawings, graphics, dramas, prose works and letters, the volume places his creative output within the context of his life and existential concerns. It links his visual art with his literary output, presenting everything in one volume so that the reader gains an integrated understanding of Barlach?s themes ? poverty, war, faith, injustice, human dignity ? and his search for meaning. The book is arranged chronologically and includes key works across media, introductory essays, biographical notes, and a concise bibliography, making it an ideal reference and introduction for both the scholar and the interested reader. Naomi Jackson Groves (1910-2001) was a Canadian painter, art historian and linguist. Born in Montreal, she studied modern languages at McGill University and later received a PhD in German Philology from Harvard University in 1950. She became a leading expert on the work of Ernst Barlach, translating several of his writings and publishing this comprehensive study of his life and art. Groves also produced her own artwork and served as professor of Fine Arts at McMaster University.
