This is an outstanding volume on every level. (Just wish it were hardbound as are some of our lesser volumes on Native Americans.) We bought our copy while on a trip many years ago and it's a never-ending wealth of fresh insights. Now that someone else needs it, and I'm downsizing besides, I find this Edward Sheriff Curtis' book--like an old friend--most difficult to part with.
Curtis is an artist with the camera, bringing his subjects to life at least as greatly as do any of the more widely recognized photographers. Photos are warm sepia toned, rather than black and white or color. Perfect. The text is extremely well written, well organized and engaging, using as it does Curtis's own journals and other primary sources. Indeed, it fills in gaps I never knew existed since it takes me along for the ride on photographic expeditions. A moving experience.
