This physically attractive and very useful book was first published in Great Britain to accompany a BBC radio series by the same name. Obviously designed for the general reader, Billings' history of the Crusades encompasses a time frame of 700 years. The author demonstrates that the European Crusades, which began in the eleventh century in an attempt by Christians to wrest the Holy Land from people considered heretics, actually did not cease until 1798. He feels that the history of the Crusades must include the history of the various states the Crusaders set up during their military exploits, and the last of these-- Malta-- was ruled as a Crusader state until the end of the eighteenth century. In a sprightly narrative, Billings examines the leaders involved in all these missions, the particular issues they were dealing with, their bloody adventures (tactics and successes and failures), and the ultimate results. A fine introduction to a complex and consequential series of events in European history. Bibliography and index.
