First edition of this work by the French Benedictine Thiery Ruinart (1657-1709). He was one of the most famous scholars from the congregation of St. Maur and long time collaborator of Jean Mabillon. He travelled throughout Europe in search of manuscript editions of the 'acta primorum martyrum', and his printed compilation of them is considered a masterpiece. The long introduction sketches the history of the persecutions of the early Christians and refutes Dodwell's these on the low number of martyrs. Capital damaged, two lower compartments of spine missing, wear to corners and edges. Ms. ex-libris on title-page. Small stamp on first free endpaper.
