Early European travellers to Bali, from the late 16th century onwards, were immediately impressed by the boundless beauty and fascinating culture they encountered. However, as there was no cultivation of spices, Bali for a long time remained untouched by the effects of colonization. Only at the beginning of 20th century did the Dutch colonial authorities assume control of Bali. Not long after, a small community of Western artists and scientists emerged, who studied and documented the culture and natural beauty of the island. Among them was a number of people who would gain international fame for their work on Bali.
In ARTISTS ON BALI, six of the most prominent European artists who worked on the island are presented. The narratives of their lives provide a unique, in-depth account of the artistic climate on Bali from the beginning of the 20th century until the present, and their respecive work is of great interest — both artistically and as a document of the splendour of the island’s culture and natural charm.
