Bookplate of Dr. J.A. van Praag. 20th century catalogue entry pasted in at first flyleaf. Bookblock is loosening a bit, but the inside is very clean. "Argenis. Newest edition. With a key, that is, an elucidation of the proper names, not published before". And indeed: 'Hippophilus' = King of Spain, "Hyanisbe" = Queen Elizabeth. Barclay (1580-1621), a Scotsman grown up in France, is considered one of the last humanists, 'un des derniers feux de lhumanisme'.
