The publication is a representative excerpt giving adequate description of the contents and specificity of the collection of the department of contemporary art.
The introductory articles are dedicated to the history of the department, conception of its work and foundation of the Ludwig Museum in the Russian Museum. The main part of the catalogue consists of essays on artists in alphabetical order. The book is supplemented with a list of publications from 1988 to 2001, an index of selected publications dedicated to the oeuvre of single artists, an illustrated list of exhibitions organised by the department from 1990 to 2001 and information on general programmes developed by the staff of the department of contemporary art.
