Tropical forests are a cornerstone asset in issues of global climate, biodiversity, and the livelihoods of millions of people. Despite international efforts, the destruction of tropical forests is continuing on an unprecedented scale. Policy measures and donor funding are not able to get a grip on colonists, loggers and ranchers who are at the cutting edge of the ever-moving forest frontiers. Understanding the underlying causes and `actors behind the scene’ is pivotal to explain and act upon tropical deforestation.
This comparative study analyses the driving forces of deforestation in Brazil, Ecuador and Cameroon. The perspectives included here were documented by extensive fieldwork and cut across the land reform issue in Brazil, the oil drilling in Ecuador and the logging boom in Cameroon. Emerging actors including the Asian logging companies, landless farmers and `empowered’ Amazon Indians begin to take control over forest land. Their land-use patters can be classified according to basic models, and indigenous groups in the three countries play a major role in the fate of the forests.
