During her years as governess to various families in the Karoo, Olive Schreiner came to know and value the rural Dutch, who are the prime subjects of the essays in Thoughts on South Africa. She had been an ardent admirer of Cecil John Rhodes, whom she saw as the agent of change in South Africa. However, disillusionment soon set in and she began to see him as the embodiment of greed and corruption and an amoral force for nineteenth-century colonialsm and capitalism. She wrote the Prefatory Note to the original work under the title Stray Thoughts on South Africa in 1896, but the collection of essays which was retitled Thoughts on South Africa was only published posthumously in 1923. The essays contain her thoughts and visionary hopes for the possible united future of the country she had grown to love; the view that our differences of race and culture are what could make this such an interesting and extraordinary land; her views on dominance, brutality, inter-mingling of race groups, differences and similarities. Considered by some to be her finest work of non-fiction, Thoughts on South Africa has, for this edition, been reintroduced and annotated by Margaret Lenta, who holds a Doctorate in English from Natal University.
