This study of Native American loanwords, or words from Native languages that have made their way into American English, is primarily for the nonspecialist. In addition to providing information on the etymology of words, each entry of several pages gives the historical context in which the words were introduced to European settlers as well as descriptions of the associated Native American traditions. Entries are arranged by categories, such as plants, clothing, and animals. Some loanwords are obvious, such as place names, while others, like toboggan, chipmunk, and parka, are not. Though written for the general reader, this book offers scholars an extensive bibliography, notes on sources for each category, and an excellent index. Cutler, who died in 1999, also authored O Brave New Words! Native American Loanwords in Current English, which focused more on the interactions between Native and European populations in North America. Recommended for academic and medium and large public libraries.
