Plus d'informations
When this stunning catalog was originally published in three volumes, from 1852?1863, what purchasers received was, in essence, a small museum in print.
The 216 hand-colored copperplate engravings offered a fully represented overview of a thousand years of applied arts in Europe, from the 6th to the 16th centuries, featuring furniture, metalwork, jewelry, tapestries, and works of bookbinding?including such masterpieces as the gilt Corvinus goblet, an enameled saltcellar, and medieval ivory combs, along with a decorative sword, now lost.
Under the guidance of Carl Becker (1794?1859), director of the Bavarian National Museum, the catalog reflected the same 19th-century fascination with the arts of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance that resulted in the founding of such institutions as the South Kensington Museum in London?today the Victoria and Albert Museum.
This superb one-volume reproduction includes two color plates that fold out to larger than 22 x 33 inches, as well as single- and double-page reproductions up to 24 x 17 inches, with captions in English, French, and German.
