In 1640 Cornelius Jansen published the Augustinus, setting out what he believed to be the true teaching of St Augustine. The book provoked a bitter controversy and Rome eventually intervened with a declaration that Jansens's doctrine was heretical. Those involved suffered great crises of conscience and experienced physical and mental hardships.
