Charles Jencks is well-known as the critic who first defined Post-Modernism in architecture, an event which led to its subsequent definition in many of the arts. Over the past decade he has continually documented new architectural trends, and his work has influenced both public and architects in their attitudes toward design. Charles Jencks, a visiting professor at the University of California in Los Angeles, teaches part-time at the Architectural Association in London and lectures widely in the United States, Europe and Japan. Aside from his writings on contemporary architecture, he has made a number of television programmes on architecture and designed several buildings. His Symbolic Architecture has influenced a part of the Post-Modern movement and his symbolic furniture is now being produced in Milan. His previous books include Architecture Today, an international survey which documents the state of architecture in the 1980s and provides a unique insight into the recent past and possible future shape of our homes and cities.
