(the author describes the establishment of translation in Javanese culture, showing the influence of the Dutch and tracing the formation of hierarchy in a Javanese neighborhood; using evidence from the Javanese theater, domestic arrangements, and notions about commodities, he indicates how Javanese situate anxiety by distinguishing what is inside and outside hierarchy; after the initial adjustment of Solo to Suharto, further intrusions, especially in education, upset traditional Javanese conceptions; though Solo accomodated to the new Order, its inhabitants continued to adhere to their own complex ideas of deference and hierarchy through translation between Low Javanese and High Javanese.)
