Maurice is born into a priviliged, dominating way of life. He grows up confident in status, precise in social ritual. Yet, although priggish and conforming, Maurice finds himself inereasingly attraced to his own sex.
At Cambridge, his unusual relaqtionsip wih Clive, a more elever undergraduate, leads to trouble with the university authorities and at home. So when Clive turns to women, Maurice feels betrayed. But it is through Clive that Maurice finally comes to meet Alec, who causes Maurice to eject his whole inherited code of conduct.
Like E.M. Forster's other novels, 'Maurice' is a plea for intellectual honesty, for nature and spontaneity; an attack on the stuffiness, pretence and humbug of English life.
Completed in 1914, 'Maurice' asserts that homosexual love can be ennobling and that any perversity in the matter lies in the society which persecutes those who love in this way. This theme caused Forster to delay the publication of this questioning, scrupulously written book until after his death.
